Biography

  • Polish pianist Maciej Raginia is in demand as a soloist around the UK and abroad and his performing career has taken him to many European countries. He has appeared on Polish television several times (TVP 1, TVP 2 & TV Polonia) and has won prizes in international piano competitions. His interpretations of Chopin’s works in particular have gained him high acclaim amongst audiences and critics alike.

    Praised for his ‘strong artistic personality’ (Tydzien Polski), ‘mastery of the piano’ (Markische Allgemaine) ‘subtle tonal colours’ (Potsdamer Neueste Nachrichten) and ‘great powers of communication from the platform’ (British pianist Andrew Ball), over the last decade Maciej has toured Europe giving concerts in the Gewandhaus, Mendelssohn-Saal and the Mendelssohn-Haus (Leipzig), the Hochschule für Music und Theather and the Niedersächsischer Landtag (Hannover), the Schloss Glienicke (Potsdam), King’s College (Cambridge), St. John’s Smith Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields (London), the Auditorio (Zaragoza) and the Nuevo Casino Principal (Pamplona) amongst many others.

    In 2016 Maciej joined PIANO WEEK as the creative director, following in the footsteps of his pianist wife Samantha Ward, its founder & artistic director. Throughout 2017 he will be touring with the festival to all of its international residencies in the UK, Germany, Italy and China. Maciej is a recording artist for Schott Music publishers and frequently records for them as part of a duo with Samantha Ward. Recent performing engagements include performances of Prokofieff’s second, Brahms’ second and Beethoven’ third and fifth piano concerti in the UK, as well as solo recitals in London, Rugby, Oswestry, Sankt Goar, Foligno and Beijing.

    Maciej received his first piano lessons from Aleksandra Walczak and Krystyna Filipowska in Poland, before he went on to continue his studies with the celebrated American pianist Kevin Kenner at the Royal College of Music in London. In 2008, supported by a City of London Corporation Scholarship Award, he gained a Masters Degree in Music Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the tutelage of the Senior Professor Joan Havill. He has also trained in masterclasses with some of the world’s legendary pianists, musicologists and pedagogues such as Robert Levin, the late Halina Czerny-Stefanska, Grigory Sokolov’s pupil and assistant Alexei Orlovetsky and Elisabeth Leonskaja; a relationship which has continued to the present day.

  • Maciej Raginia występuje regularnie jako solista w Wielkiej Brytanii i poza jej granicami, koncertując w znanych salach w całej Europie, takich jak: Mendelssohn-Saal w lipskim Gewandhausie, Mendelssohn-Haus, parlamencie Dolnej Saksonii w Hannowerze, Schloss Glienicke w Poczdamie, King’s College Cambridge, londyńskim St-Martin-in-the-Fields czy Auditorio w Saragossie. Kilkakrotnie występował na antenie Telewizji Polskiej i jako młody pianista był finalistą wielu międzynarodowych konkursów pianistycznych w Polsce, Francji i Hiszpanii.

    Swoje pierwsze muzyczne kroki stawiał pod okiem Aleksandry Walczak, a następnie był uczniem Krystyny Filipowskiej w Poznaniu, by po uzyskaniu matury jako stypendysta fundacji Pro Arte kontynuować naukę w Royal College of Music w Londynie w klasie Kevina Kennera. Dzięki stypendium City of London Corporation studia ukończył pod kierunkiem Senior Professor Joan Havill w londyńskiej Guildhall School of Music and Drama, gdzie otrzymał stopień Master of Music in Performance. W 2010 roku Maciej swoim recitalem zainaugurował pierwszy sezon Paros Classical Piano Festival w Grecji.

    W 2011 roku został zaproszony do Berlina, by wziąć udział w mistrzowskiej klasie legendarnej pianistki Elisabeth Leonskaja. W tym samym roku w duecie z brytyjską pianistką Samanthą Ward nagrał dwie płyty z cyklu ‘The Classical Piano Method’ Hansa-Günthera Heumanna dla wydawnictwa Schott Music. W repertuarze na ten sezon oprócz recitali w Wielkiej Brytanii są miedzy innymi II koncert fortepianowy Prokofieva, V koncert fortepianowy Beethovena oraz koncert Griega.
